Vendors

New vendors are welcome. We’re always looking for vendors of fresh fruit and vegetables, prepared, ready-to-eat and artisanal foods, artists and holistic products. Produce/products shall be wholesome and of high quality. Growers will NOT use Genetically Modified seeds or GMO ingredients in prepared foods. Products/produce must be from farms that are organic, are in transition, or that use ecologically sustainable methods that meet the ethical and environmental approval of the market management. Farmers raising meat or poultry may sell it if it is free range and with minimum medication. Anything that is not organic, and has been approved by management, must be clear to customers why it’s not organic and with good reason, for instance coffee, which cannot be grown here but must be from a reputable coffee plantation that supports our values and is fair trade certified. Art and Crafts for sale have an “earth based“ theme, are based on recycled, sustainable, natural materials.

In the fall, glorious golden sunlight and cool nights are perfect for developing the complex elements of our late reds: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Vidals turn a golden colour and develop the distinctive little freckles that say it’s almost time to pick them. While we started fruit farming with principally grapes, our product line is continually expanding. Our peach trees are happier with clean cultivation under them but this flies in the face of natural order and it seems like a shame to waste all that nicely prepared soil so this year we have planted strawberries under the peach trees. This is a trial block of a variety which is highly disease resistant. If indeed the strawberries are happy with our ecological approach, they will form an ongoing part of our farm system.

They liked it so much, Bob’s grandfather purchased land near Waterford and resettled here from Winnipeg. Bob and Juli have acquired a good knowledge of growing food trends and are tuned-in to the growing nutrition awareness and healthy eating patterns that have become primary concern for society. With this knowledge and a working plan, they installed a kitchen, adjacent to their sweet potato barn. They began making muffins, brownies, tarts and other yummy tasty treats that they now sell, along with their sweet potatoes, solely at Farmers’ markets throughout Southern Ontario. Bob & Juli Proracki grow sweet potatoes from organic seed stock that they import from a small farm in the Eastern USA. They grow everything without the use of herbicides or insecticides and use no waxes or fungicides in the washing and packaging of their products.

The Frugal Farm, Elgin

The name of our farm is called The Frugal Farm specializing in naturally raised, pasture fed meats. We follow all organic standards but do not feel the need for certification at this point. The animals raised on our farm produce meat that is far more superior in taste and quality than conventional factory farms.  As a result, we have created our own product line called Frugal Meats. The animals are all rare and heritage breeds suited to live in our climate and therefore no need for use of growth hormones, antibiotics, etc.  They are free range and live a happy natural life here. All meats are custom cut to your specifications and are processed at federally inspected facilities.

My pigs are rare breeds called Large Blacks. They originated from England in the 1880’s and were quite popular producing good bacon until about 1960.   They declined to the point that in 1980 there was only 1 Large Black female left in New Zealand. To save the breed, a male was found in Australia.  Today there are small populations around the world.

The cattle I have decided to raise for meat, milk and learn about are called Canadian Lineback.  They make excellent mothers, good milkers and don’t require any grain to get that well-marbled meat, making them ideal to raise only on pasture.
